In this new series of blogs, we will talk more about Balsam Medico and give you an insider scoop of everything Medico. Next in line: Consent Forms.
In our process to completely turn every clinic in the Emirates paperless, we’ve introduced digitized consent forms.
What are consent forms?
In any medical establishment, the patient should be informed of all medical treatments and procedures being done to them and should sign a document to show that they are informed and in agreement with the contents of the document.
There are many benefits to implementing and digitizing your clinic’s consent form. To explore some:
– Implementing your consent forms can help the patient understand what they are going to undergo.
– It protects the clinic legally against any complaint made by the patient.
– Digitizing the consent forms helps in increasing the clinic’s operations efficiency.
– With digital consent forms, missing information or illegible handwriting is no longer an issue.
– It also increases security, by no longer having forms misplaced, or accessed by unauthorized individuals.
– Another benefit is that digitizing consent forms can result in saving costs. The long-term savings can be significant. It eliminates the need for paper, printing and storage, reducing costs associated with these materials.
And how can our EMR system “Balsam Medico” help you digitize your clinic’s consent forms?
In most cases, the clinic will keep a copy of their consent form(s) on their computers. When we start setting the clinic up with our system, we request a copy of their forms, do a little bit of our technical magic and upload the forms to Medico.
Now when a patient visits the clinic, the dentist usually informs them of the procedure, treatment and the overall process. Instead of printing the form and handing it to them to sign, you can hand the patient a tablet with the form ready for their signature.
What happens is, either the doctor clicks on generate the form in the current visit view, or from the patient reports in their respective profiles. Select the desired consent form, and the form appears on the webform page on the connected tablet.
The patient is given the tablet to read and when they are ready, just click on “Sign as a patient”. You’ll notice that the data is automatically added, along with the doctor’s signature and stamp. All that’s left is the patient signature.
Once the patient signs on the tablet, the signature is then saved to their profile. The consent form is now signed and saved as well in the patient reports.
Where to view the patient’s consent form(s)?
When clicking the patient’s tab, select the patient to open their profile. Scroll to the bottom of the side menu and click patient reports. This page is role-specific, meaning some accounts may not be able to access while others can. This can be set by the admin. We will talk more about this feature in future blogs.
Once you select patient reports, you can view all reports, forms and medical certifications. You can view who created the form and when it was created too. This is important to hold members accountable for their actions, especially in significant tasks such as gaining the patient’s consent.
